Lüderitz has been experiencing significant water constraints for the past week, caused by a pipe burst along the feeder line that leads to the NamWater terminal reservoir.
Speaking to nbc News, Lüderitz Mayor Phillippus Balhao has reassured residents that the town council and NamWater are working hard to restore the water supply in the town.
Balhao says that the bulk water supplier has completed the repairs, but the current inflow of water into the reservoir is still slow.
"The technical team informed me that the terminal reservoir is filling, and they will still be supplying water tonight to the affected areas. There will be mobile teams going from suburb to suburb, making sure that they can assist the residents with water. But by tomorrow evening, we will be switching over from the bypass to the terminal and central reservoir, so that means hopefully from tomorrow, if we are able to raise the levels of our reservoirs to a significant level, that water supply will be restored to normalcy," he said.
Balhao, however, warned that they expect some constraints for this weekend, "but our hope is by tomorrow night that the reservoir will be at a level where the high-lying areas won't be as harshly affected, but everybody here is all hands on deck; everybody is trying to do as much as we can to make sure that our residents do receive the water."
Despite the reassurance from the Luderitz Town Council, some residents who spoke to nbc News say that they are still struggling to collect water, as the container truck that supplies water takes too long due to the high number of residents affected.
The Luderitz Town Council has awarded a tender for the construction of another five million litre water reservoir, which will ensure water security for the harbour town.
