Registration Points for 2024 GRV

The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) has officially started the general registration of voters (GRV) across the country this morning.

ECN has deployed 567 registration teams across the country to conduct the GRV, which is scheduled to take place from 03 June to 01 August 2024.

Police record 12 incidents of baby dumping in three months

Between January and March 2024, the police recorded 12 incidents of baby dumping.

This the police say is alarming, as there are a number of authorised places, such as schools, hospitals, and churches, where mothers can leave a newborn without being charged.

This adds to the tally of over 50 infants dumped in 2023.

The trend is worrisome for authorities and child rights activists, considering the new childcare act makes provision for new mothers to leave infants in the care of authorised persons.

Swapo Party Central Committee convenes amidst leadership transition

The Swapo Party Central Committee's first meeting for 2024 started in the capital this morning.

The party's Vice President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, who addressed the meeting, says the nation and Swapo Party are poorer without the visionary leadership of the late President Hage Geingob.

Geingob was the party's president at the time of his death.

Nandi-Ndaitwah said some possible challenges on how to move forward without Dr. Hage Geingob were identified.

President Mbumba thanks Namibians for unity during mourning period

President Nangolo Mbumba has expressed gratitude to Namibians for their conduct during the past three weeks, following the death of the late President Hage Geingob.

In a statement, President Mbumba said citizens conducted themselves in a dignified and orderly manner, calling it the greatest honour bestowed on the memory of the dearly departed Commander-in-Chief.

Following the death of President Hage Geingob on February 4, 2024, the Namibian nation went through difficult hours and weeks of grief. 

Grade 12 qualification remains mandatory for acceptance at UNAM

Even if a learner achieves top performance in Grade 11, they will not be accepted at the University of Namibia (UNAM).

UNAM's Student Recruitment and Operations Officer, Josy Nghipandua, has reiterated that one must have completed Grade 12.

Nghipandua advised learners to take at least two AS subjects, which are to be combined with three ordinary-level subjects, for the required marks.

She says, that with adjustments to the curriculum, there are vital NQF levels needed as well as a level of maturity to join the tertiary phase.

Parents urged to shape future of children

As the 2024 academic year approaches, the Director of Programmes and Quality Assurance at the Ministry of Education, Arts, and Culture, Ayesha Wentworth, is urging parents to talk to their children about the dangers of using harmful substances.

Drugs can reduce a child's ability to learn, cause them to even drop out of school, and disrupt their lives and those around them.

Wentworth says children should expect harsh consequences if found with drugs on the school grounds, whether through disciplinary procedures or even face suspension.

Otjiwarongo youths pledge change in 2024

President Geingob hopes to improve pension grant in 2024

President Hage Geingob says his hope is that the old-age pension grant will be increased to N$2000 or more.

Dr. Geingob says his desire is to see this happen before he leaves the presidential chambers.

Currently, over 202,294 pensioners receive the monthly old-age grant.

The Namibian leader recalled the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, which prompted the government to enact policies and provide fiscal support to businesses and cash grants to more than 500,000 Namibians.
