Communal Farmers receive stud rams for quality breeding

Thirty communal farmers received quality goat rams from the Berseba Constituency Office to enhance the quality of their livestock and transform their farming. 

They also received training in animal husbandry, understanding farming cycles, and how to transform and follow creative farming system management. 

The Councillor of Berseba Constituency, Jeremias Goeieman, urged farmers to venture into a shared community of quality animals and sell among them, as this could mean good-quality produce and price sharing within the farming communities. 

Youth embrace agriculture as viable livelihood option

Agriculture is becoming popular among young people as a means to make a living.

30-year-old Petrus Muyeve from Karibib is one such person who turned his erf into a garden, and it's now paying off.

Muyeve migrated to Karibib from Rundu in search of a better life for himself and his three children.

However, after years in Karibib, he found himself still unemployed and struggling to make ends meet.

Muyeve and his family live in a location called Uis, one of many informal settlements that have sprung up due to urbanisation.

WFP supports small scale farmers in Zambezi

The World Food Programme (WFP), in collaboration with the Namibian Agronomic Board, recently handed over essential farming equipment to two small-scale farmers in the Zambezi Region. This initiative aims to support and enhance agricultural productivity in the area.

One of the farmers, Regina Mayumbelo, received equipment valued at N$250,000, which included fencing material, a shade net with irrigation, seeds, and continued technical support.

The second farmer, Vincent Siliye, whose equipment included solar panels, was funded at N$350,000.

Namibia's Meat Board rebrands as Livestock and Livestock Products Board

The Meat Board of Namibia has changed its name to the Livestock and Livestock Products Board of Namibia (LLPBN) to include under its mandate dairy products, animal hides, and poultry and poultry products.

The Meat Board is mandated by the Meat Industry Act to regulate cattle, goats, sheep, and pigs. However, the ACT was amended to ensure the company would serve all livestock and livestock by-products. Gov gives another shot at securing jobs for fisherman

The government is still seized by the plight of a group of fishermen who lost their jobs in 2015 after a strike.

The workers lost their employment after the fishing quotas of some major employers, such as Namsov, were drastically reduced.

Hardap Dam water levels show minimal improvement despite recent rainfall

Despite some rainfall in its catchment area, the water level of the Hardap Dam has not significantly improved.

Dawie De Klerk, Chairperson of the Hardap Irrigation Farmers Association, reports that the dam has received only 0.7% water inflow following the rains.

As of Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock, the dam level was 12.2% compared to 11.5% on Monday morning.

According to De Klerk, the dam is still experiencing some inflow.

Residents of Mariental and the Hardap Irrigation Scheme rely on the Hardap Dam for water supplies.

Draught hampers harvest in Zambezi

Due to the ongoing drought, farmers in the Zambezi Region are counting their losses.

The region, whose residents heavily rely on agriculture for both consumption and commercial purposes, is worried about the prospects of their farming. 

Some residents of Maalo Village next to Lake Lyambezi say not only do they have to deal with wildlife damaging their crops, but a lack of rainfall also made things difficult this year.

The unemployed farmers who survive through farming say they will not get their return on investment.

Minister Schlettwein advocates water reuse to tackle Kunene Region's water scarcity

The Minister of Agriculture, Water, and Land Reform, Carl Schlettwein, said the water reuse method is an approach that can be taken in Kunene to address the water shortage in the region.

Schlettwein said this at the joint commemoration of World Wetlands Day and World Water Day in Opuwo.

Crop farmers fear bleak harvest

Though many ploughed well on time, crops have started to wilt because of a lack of rain.

The picture regarding crop fields in some parts of the northern regions looks bleak, and farmers are losing hope for a good harvest.

A worrying fact is that most households here are headed by either school-going children or unemployed youth, who rely on government social grants for their survival.
