Cabinet directs Finance Ministry to assess re-imagined SACU

Cabinet has directed the Minister of Finance and Public Enterprises, Iipumbu Shiimi, to lead a comprehensive assessment of the proposed re-imagined Southern African Customs Union (SACU).

This was part of the recommendations at the 8th Summit of the SACU Heads of State and Government held in Eswatini.

This resolution was announced by the Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Dr. Peya Mushelanga.

IPPR calls on Finance Minister to release report on TransNamib

The Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) has called on Finance Minister Iipumbu Shiimi to release the report of Ernst & Young into the operations of TransNamib as well as responses by the board and management to the report.

The call comes after the report by the auditing firm allegedly revealed some procurement irregularities.

The report follows an independent investigation by Ernst and Young that commenced in 2021 after allegations and perceptions of poor governance and mismanagement at TransNamib.

Henny Seibeb calls for laws to control and manage lithium mining

The Landless People's Movement (LPM) Member of Parliament, Hennie Seibeb. has called for the enactment of laws to control and manage lithium mining in Namibia.

Seibeb said this when he motivated his motion in the National Assembly, which was supported by many MPs.

Shiimi Dismisses Reports of No Salary Increase for Civil Servants

Finance and Public Enterprises Minister, Iipumbu Shiimi has dismissed reports that government will not affect civil servants' salary increments as a result of stringent conditions enforced by the International Monetary Fund.

Shiimi explained that as a result of COVID-19, the government was forced to seek some additional financial resources from the IMF.

However, he says this money did not come with conditions and that government did not commit not to increasing the salaries.

PDM leader calls for suspension of NAMCOR's MD Immanuel Mulunga

The leader of the official opposition, McHenry Venaani, has called for the suspension of the National Petroleum Corporation of Namibia's (NAMCOR) Managing Director, Immanuel Mulunga.

Venaani says the nature of current events at the state oil company calls for an integrity inquiry and therefore wants the Minister of Finance and Public Enterprises, Iipumbu Shiimi, to act within 48 hours.

The Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) will also move a motion in Parliament to initiate a parliamentary investigation into the allegations leveled against senior management at NAMCOR.

Finance Minister requests security for Namcor Board chairperson Jennifer Comalie

The Minister of Finance and Public Enterprises, Iipumbu Shiimi has requested the Nampol Inspector-General, Joseph Shikongo to conduct a threat assessment on Namcor Board chairperson, Jennifer Comalie and provide necessary security to her.

Shiimi, in a letter to Lt. Gen. Shikongo, said that Comalie had informed him and Mines and Energy Minister Tom Alweendo that she was worried about her safety and that of her daughter, during a meeting last week.

The 2023/24 Budget caters for youth and women development

The government will fund various youth programs, aimed at capacity building and skills development.

In the budget tabled by the Finance Minister, Iipumbu Shiimi on Wednesday, funding is availed for charcoal production projects through the National Youth Service, as well as for a youth credit scheme and 121 rural youth enterprises, under the Ministry of Youth.

Iipumbu Shiimi revealed that Agribank has so far disbursed N$25,6 million to women and youth towards promoting inclusivity.

Finance Minister tables 2023/2024 budget

The Minister of Finance Iipumbu Shiimi has tabled a national budget of more than N$72,6 billion during the 2023-2024 financial year, in the National Assembly.


Just like in previous national budgets, the ministries of Education, Health, and Defence continue to dominate state allocation.

In his opening statement, Shiimi was hopeful for increased revenue collection - while forecasting good economic growth.

Notwithstanding the ramifications of COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Shiimi's speech was centered on Economic Revival and Caring for the Poor.
