COP27 agrees on funding to poor countries affected by climate change

Environmentalists, pressure groups and other stakeholders are applauding the decision to provide loss and damage funding for vulnerable countries hard hit by climate disasters. 
Loss and damage funding to poorer countries is just one of the key outcomes from the deliberations at the UN Climate Change Conference or COP27 at Egypt's Sharm el-Sheik.

Though the work programs of the Fund are still under discussion, the contentious issue of loss and damage funding to poorer countries could no longer be ignored.

President Hage Geingob calls for immediate ceasefire in DRC

President Hage Geingob, the Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence, and Security Cooperation, has joined the international community in calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

He also urged armed groups, including M23, to disarm.

President Geingob's call for peace in the DRC follows an upsurge in armed conflict in the north of the central African country, where M23 rebels are accused of running amok and have taken control of two towns in Eastern Kivu Province.

UN continues to support local businesses in Namibia

The outgoing UN Resident Coordinator says the UN office in Namibia will continue to support the ''Buy Local, Grow Namibia'' campaign.

The ''Buy Local, Grow Namibia'' campaign, launched last year in collaboration with the government and stakeholders, encourages support for local businesses and self-reliance.

Sen Pang shared an update with President Hage Geingob, including the training aspect added to the campaign.

The UN diplomat also commented on Namibia's classification by the World Bank as an upper middle-income country.

World food prices fall for sixth straight months- UN

World food prices fell for the sixth month in a row in September, UN data showed Friday, as they continued to decline since a record was reached following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The Food and Agriculture Organization said its price index, which tracks the monthly change in international prices of a basket of food commodities, averaged 136.3 points in September, a 1.1% drop from August.

The index, however, was 5.5% higher than in September 2021.

The monthly decline was driven by a "sharp fall" in the prices of vegetable oils, the United Nations agency said.

GIPF launches institution's Responsible Investment and Active Ownership Policy

Environmental, social, and corporate governance issues are financially relevant and can improve the risk-adjustment performance of any given company's investment portfolios.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Government Institution Pension Fund (GIPF), David Nuyoma, highlighted this at the launch of the institution's Responsible Investment and Active Ownership Policy in Windhoek.

Nuyoma noted the Fund's Trustees recognized the need to enhance and value their investment process by adopting the Responsible Investment and Active Ownership Policy.
