EIG payment to continue until last qualifying applicant is paid

The Chief Public Relations Officer in the Ministry of Finance (MoF) reiterated that the Emergency Income Grant (EIG) is for people who have lost income and the unemployed. He said the EIG had an initial target of more than 740 000. However, the ministry received close to a million applicants of which half have been approved and payments have been made. Shidhudhu said a number of cases have been rejected due to tax numbers indicating that the person is an active taxpayer. However, data has been obtained for verification and many names have been cleared and the process for them to receive their money will take place from Monday. He said the application process is closed and no new applications will be received. The ministry is in the verification process to ensure that the grant goes to those who deserve it and to avoid fraudulent activities, adding the process will continue until 15 May 2020. Shidhudhu concluded by appealing to the applicants to be patient and that payment will continue until the last qualifying person is paid. He said this during a discussion at the COVID-19 Communication Centre today.
