Fishrot accused expected in court on Monday

The nine people charged in Namibia's biggest fishing industry scandal called Fishrot will return to the Windhoek Magistrate's Court on Monday. Magistrate Vanessa Stanley postponed their case to 14 December, when they last appeared before her in September this year. The case returns after authorities were given a final opportunity to conclude investigations. The court may provisionally withdraw the case and release the accused persons if the State has not concluded investigations as yet. Former fisheries and justice ministers Bernhardt Esau and Sacky Shanghala were charged alongside entrepreneurs Tamson and James Hatuikulipi, Ricardo Gustavo, and Pius Mwatelulo. They were arrested in November last year and charged with multiple counts stemming from their alleged receipt of a N$150 million bribe from Icelandic fishing company, Samherji. Three other people were subsequently arrested including National Fish Corporation (Fishcor) leader Mike Nghipunya, Windhoek resident Nigel van Wyk and Sakaria Kuutondokwa, who is a police officer.
