Minister of Home Affairs, Immigration and Safety and Security Lucia Iipumbu has said a fleet management policy is in place and guides the operational readiness of police vehicles.
She noted, however, that the force operates different categories of vehicles, each with a different lifespan.
Iipumbu was responding to a question from Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) MP Immanuel Nashinge on the operational readiness and legal compliance of the Namibian police vehicle fleet.
“Decommissioning is therefore not applied as a single automatic kilometre trigger across all vehicle types,” she said.
On allegations of ignoring the policy and tampering with odometers, Iipumbu said the policy is not ignored and that the force has no record of complaints to date implicating members in tampering with the devices.
On the number of vehicles exceeding 500,000 kilometres, she said there were 92 at the time the report was prepared.
