Houses constructed under the mass housing project at Karasburg still remain unoccupied. The councillor for the Karasburg west constituency, Dennis Coetzee said the residents are simply unable to afford the houses. Out of the 155 houses built under the mass housing programme, only 48 have thus far been handed over to beneficiaries. While 107 houses are credit linked, with their allocation and selling still in the hands of the National Housing Enterprise.
