The Landless People's Movement (LPM) has urged President Hage Geingob to dismiss or strongly reprimand his Press Secretary, Dr Alfredo Hengari, for what they call, 'insensitive, and unconstitutional' utterances, on protests against the killing of fishermen in the Zambezi Region by the Botswana Defence Force (BDF). They also call of Geingob's counterpart in Botswana, president Mokgweetsi Masisi, to officially apologise for the incident through his High Commissioner in Namibia, and provide support towards the burial of the slain victims. Earlier this year, over 100 local journalists issued a strongly worded letter to the Head of State, saying he should reprimand Hengari, for a plethora of accusations, including alleged intimidation. In a statement issued yesterday, Hengari said that planned protests against the incident are pointless and unnecessary, on the basis of the deliberations between the law enforcement, aggrieved family members, Geingob and Masisi. LPM deputy leader, Henny Seibeb said such comments are insensitive and meant to belittle the gravity of the incident, and will, in the long run, affect the reputation of Geingob. Meanwhile, he also emphasised the need to erect barriers to avoid people from unknowingly invading Botswana at unmarked entry points to avoid confrontation. Seibeb made the remarks at a press conference on Friday. He also pleads for protection from the Inspector-General of the Namibian Police Force for opposition figures, especially, LPM chief campaigner, Bernadus Swaartbooi following the remarks by ex-army general Lieutenant General Martin Shali at a rally recently. Seibeb also warned against the use of food aid to garner votes. He said anyone found guilty of using food aid for electioneering should be imprisoned for at least 10 years to deter would-be offenders. The opposition, Seibeb added, will emerge as winners in key economic local authorities such as Walvis Bay and eventually control the National Council. The LPM also calls on the Electoral Commission of Namibia to tighten its laws or introduce penalties against political organisations who violate the code of conduct.
