Minister Sioka stands by her call to jail GBV victims who withdraw cases

Gender Equality Minister Doreen Sioka said she stands by her controversial call to possibly jail GBV victims who withdraw cases, as according to her they are wasting Government resources. In a recent exclusive interview with NAMPA, Sioka said the number of GBV cases being withdrawn by victims is disturbing and something needs to be done to address the issue. She said she has already started lobbying with the Ministry of Justice to have the jailing of GBV victims who withdraw cases included in the amendments of the Combating of Domestic Violence Act, which are expected to be tabled in Parliament next year. Sioka warned victims to stop withdrawing cases as GBV was a thorn in the flesh of Government. The minister first made this call last month during the launch of the 16 Days of Activism against GBV. Her statement went viral on different social media platforms leading to a debate on whether such a call would be a solution to GBV issues in Namibia. Sioka, however, maintained her stance explaining that she wants a committee to be set up by Justice that will ensure that victims of GBV who withdraw cases spend some time in prison or holding cells. She stated that she has already started lobbying the Justice Minister on this issue .
