Minor murder accused appears in court at Gobabis

A 13-year-old boy who allegedly killed 18-year-old Anton Goeieman at the Kanaan A informal settlement in Gobabis in August, on Tuesday made his second court appearance in the Gobabis Magistrate’s Court. The accused appeared before Magistrate Eden Iyambo, who postponed the case to 27 January 2021. The case was postponed for the second time to once again allow for further police investigations and to allow the accused to acquire legal representation. It is alleged that the accused minor stabbed Goeieman in the neck with a knife during a fight after Goeieman allegedly accused the minor of stealing cocaine and sandals from him. The alleged incident occurred on 01 August and on 04 August, the accused made his first court appearance before Magistrate Iyambo. He was granted bail and the case was postponed to 13 October 2020 to allow for police investigation and for the accused to obtain legal representation. During his second hearing, the minor, however, informed the court that he had applied for legal representation but has not yet received a response. Public Prosecutor Marchell Hoeb, who represented the state during the hearing here Tuesday, informed the court that the police could not investigate the matter as they were waiting for the photo plan and two statements. He, therefore, agreed that the case be postponed. Hoeb also agreed to the granting of bail which was reduced from N$2 000 to N$1 000. According to court documents, the conditions of his bail were explained to the accused during the hearing, including that a warrant will be issued against him and his bail will be provisionally cancelled should he fail to appear in court on the set date. -NAMPA
