Mobile Telecommunications (MTC) Limited has cautioned customers to be alert and avoid falling prey to scammers over the festive season. A media statement issued on Thursday by MTC communications officer Fikameni Mathias said a scam has come to the mobile operator's attention, whereby fraudsters who pretend to be MTC employees defraud customers by calling them from a private number giving them false information in an attempt to solicit money from them. Mathias said MTC anticipates a rise in this dishonest trend and would like to warn customers to be vigilant of these scams. He said the most common of these scams are calls from privatised numbers, web-based mobile sites, and social media with dubious but enticing titles where the caller or supposed web owner pretends to be MTC. Mathias further noted that from the many scams one targets families, especially the elderly, where a caller would call a family claiming a relative has been involved in an accident and hence money should be sent for ambulance services. He emphasised that MTC will never ask you to share your banking details telephonically. Mathias advised MTC customers to always contact the customer call centre to verify when in doubt.
