Namibia celebrates 32nd anniversary of the Namibian Constitution

Today marks 32 years since the adoption of the Constitution of the Republic of Namibia by the Constituent Assembly, who drafted the Namibian Constitution in record time, and unanimously adopted it on 9 February 1990, the day annually observed as the Constitution Day. Speaker of the National Assembly (NA), who is one of two remaining members of the Constituent Assembly in the current parliament, has urged Namibians to make the Constitution a living document. Professor Peter Katjavivi in his anniversary message said in the Constituent Assembly, that different political parties that fought against each other, adopted the Constitution in 1990 through consensus and not by majority vote. The Constitution, he said, has guided Namibia to build a strong nation founded on the principles of unity, liberty and justice. Based on the document, the Parliament crafted laws that have repealed the discriminatory legal instruments of the apartheid era, to ensure that all people are treated as equals before the law, said the Speaker.
