Namibia is expected to import between 140 to 150 000 tonnes of white maize this year. The country is expected to harvest about 45 000 tonnes of white maize locally. Namibian Agronomic Board Administrative Manager Antoinette Venter says this amount of the staple food will take the country to the next harvesting season. Out of the expected locally produced maize, about 18 000 tonnes will be distributed to Government silos. The remaining will be divided among the country's main commercial millers at Rundu, Ongwediva, Tsumeb and Windhoek. Venter however told NBC News that Namibia's exact harvest will be determined by the middle of August. The 140 000 tonnes to be imported, will be sourced from South Africa, which is said to have produced enough white maize. Namibia's annual consumption ranges between 150 and 200 000 tonnes.
