Zambezi Governor Alufea Sampofu highlighted that the University of Namibia's (UNAM) expansion of its wildlife management and tourism programmes will provide vital opportunities for unemployed youth in the region.
"We have over 400 graduates in the Zambezi Region who remain unemployed," Governor Sampofu said. "The programmes at the Katima Mulilo campus have been limited, with few options for career growth. By introducing wildlife and tourism studies, we can broaden horizons for secondary school learners and graduates alike, offering them a more diverse path forward."
Germany's Ambassador to Namibia, Thorsten Hutter, emphasised that Germany's involvement is driven by a commitment to community empowerment and infrastructure development.
"Germany is committed to further supporting this initiative by constructing a hostel at the new facility. Our cooperation contributes to Namibia's sustainable development by balancing economic growth with environmental stewardship. Currently, nearly N$2 billion has been allocated to biodiversity projects through KfW and various GIZ programmes. Germany’s efforts in biodiversity cooperation aim to tackle the interconnected challenges of biodiversity, climate change, and inclusive development globally."
