Ohangwena police bemoan the excessive movement of people across the Angola-Namibia border

Police officers patrolling the Angola-Namibia border in the Ohangwena Region say they are faced with challenges in executing their duties amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Law enforcement officials find it difficult to control the situation as Namibia has a curfew in place while Angola has none. They say the movement of people along the borderline is too much, as many are farmers and move back to their homestead in the neighbouring country anytime. Angolan nationals alongside the border said they depend heavily for basic necessities on Namibia as they live far away from shops in their country. Police officers raised their concerns during an awareness campaign and information sharing session organised by the ministries of health, information and communication technology as well as the Namibian Police. NamPol's spokesperson in Ohangwena, Inspector Kaume Itumba said the porous borderline also created loopholes for Namibian nationals. He said some Namibians allegedly enter Angola to host religious events and other gatherings that are prohibited in Namibia as a result of COVID-19 prevention measures.
