Safari Court Hotel to lay off 177 staff members

One hundred and seventy-seven staff members of the Safari Court Hotel are to be laid off this Friday. The accommodation establishment has, since the start of the state of emergency, received no new guests and its conference facilities stand closed. Hotel management says that the establishment's occupation is at 0% and by Friday 177 will join the line of unemployment. It has a staff complement of 219 workers with salary payments estimated at N$1,9 million per month. Philip Ellis the chairperson for the hotel says that, should that expense be maintained for a longer period of time, under the current circumstances and without any significant income, the business will inevitably go insolvent. Ellis added that the hotel management is hopeful to return to business as usual, by February 2021.
