Only days after Shoprite Namibia withdrew a lawsuit it also dropped the disciplinary action against its workers. The Centre for People’s Resistance, who represented the workers, announced early Wednesday evening. Shoprite was suing 93 employees for N$4,5 million for the legal costs and damages after participating in an unprotected strike in 2015. Windhoekers demonstrated in front of Shoprite’s Independence Avenue outlet last Friday calling for a consumer boycott of the group. Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Labour, Bro-Mathew Shinguadja told the media on Friday that government has issued directives to Shoprite to resolve disputes with its employees amicably but the giant retailer has arrogantly ignored these directives. Shinguadja said Government is in support of a consumer boycott against Shoprite and will henceforth stop buying food bank supplies from the retailer. The workers have now agreed to final written warnings. The Centre for People’s Resistance said the workers want to focus on the reasons for their protest action in 2015, which include better salaries and benefits, which Shoprite is continuing to deny them.
