South African couple found guilty, fined for illegal entry into Grootfontein army base

The two South African nationals who were arrested on 7 June 2022, after they were allegedly found photographing military equipment illegally inside the Grootfontein military base, were found guilty on Wednesday afternoon by the court in the town. The two accused, Walter John Dalton, 60, and his 58-year-old wife, Cornelia Maria Dalton, appeared before the Grootfontein Magistrate, Adelinu Hailonga. Hailonga had found them guilty and sentenced John to one-year imprisonment or an option to pay a fine of N$15 000, while his wife Cornelia was sentenced to a three-month in prison or a fine of N$5 000. The couple opted to pay and avoided the prison terms. Public prosecutor, Sylvious Malange, had represented the State in the matter, while the South African nationals defended themselves in court. The court was told that the couple entered Namibia on 25 April this year as tourists and expected to exit the Namibian borders on or before 25 July 2022. It is however still unknown as to where they had travelled to inside Namibia before their arrest at the Grootfontein military base, where they were found to have trespassed. The couple was out on bail of N$5 000 each before the finalisation of this case on Wednesday. NAMPA
