A veld fire has been reported in the Etosha National Park. The Deputy Executive Director in the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism says the fire is being closely monitored by park officials and it is under control at the moment. Colgar Sikopo noted that the veld fire started at a nearby commercial farm and entered the Etosha National Park on Sunday. He says it does not present any danger to wildlife in the park and no wild animal has been killed or caught in the fire so far. The fire, Sikopo says, is burning on the eastern part of the park and has been burning in one of the blocks that the ministry was going to burn for management purposes because of the moribund material in the block. Further adding that last night the fire was put down in the Namutoni area. However, Sikopo noted that a second small fire broke out in Halali, which they are monitoring closely. He further noted that the situation is under control as park officials are on the ground monitoring the situation of this fire too. Also, Sikopo said they also have an aircraft on-site to monitor the fire from the air and communicate with the ground team. He added that should the situation be pressing or go out of hand they will notify the public and seek additional help.
