Local and Regional Authorities in the Hardap and ||Kharas regions kick-started efforts to put in place their own power systems in partnership with independent power producers.

Political Office bearers of the two regions gathered at Keetmanshoop to explore ways how to set up their own power systems.

The ||Kharas Regional Council Chairperson Joseph Isaack explains that the authorities through their own power systems want to create employment and make access to electricity cheaper.

"The aim of this gathering is to see how best we tap into the electricity industry or electricity industry because we realize that our region, the two regions, especially, we haven't had a regional approach with electricity, there are no consolidation efforts in terms of how we can deal or approach weak business in the electricity sector."

Also in attendance are the representatives from the Electricity Control Board who gave tips on the pros and cons of electricity distribution and generation.

ECB Support Manager Francois Robertson said they have been invited by the political leadership of the two regions to clarify issues regarding the electricity supply industry and how they can assist them, there are challenges in terms of infrastructure maintenance and the supply, and also opportunities for them to generate electricity.

The gathering also resolved that local and regional councils take resolutions that will enable them to enter into power purchase agreements before the next meeting.

The next meeting is scheduled for next month.
