Rufus Sheehama, station manager at Kunene Community Radio, says the station is swamped with addressing social and economic development challenges faced by the community around Opuwo.

He says that on a daily basis, the talk radio station receives complaints from community members about a lack of services such as water and mobile network coverage.

Sheehama says the regional leadership at the local authority level is not forthcoming to engage the community through the radio platform, and he further informed nbc News that some of his listeners claim that they still do not know who their local authority councilors are.

The station received a sponsorship from the Indigenous People of Africa Coordinating Committee (IPAC), a South African-based NGO, from which it will use some of the funds to celebrate the upcoming Independence Day and provide the local community with gardening tools and seeds.

Kunene FM was founded in 2015 with the purpose of telling the stories of indigenous people; the radio station survives on advertisements from local businesses.
