Calls made to the Windhoek Municipality since 2017 to look into the state of the Greenwell Matongo Community Library appear to have fallen on deaf ears, the community says.

The facility has had to endure a leaky roof, which threatens the security and safety of its contents.

The library was established in 2005 to provide library and information services to the Greenwell Matongo community.

Besides the traditional library services, the facility offers free internet access, photocopying and faxing of documents, scanning and lamination, free computer training, and workshops.

When the nbc News team visited the community library, only a few adult readers were found making use of the facility, along with about a dozen children doing puzzles.

Other improvements called for include a repaint and WiFi access, which was lost in 2020.

The leaky roof is the biggest threat, and the library cannot accommodate too many students during the rainy season, as some parts of the building get flooded.
