Parents who have registered their children at Thipanana Primary School in the Kavango East Region are calling on the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture to employ more teachers at the school.

The parents claim that there is no teaching and learning taking place since the school reopened.

The school has more than 100 learners from Grades one, two and three and has been operating with one teacher since January this year.

Parents say their children go to school every day just to go and play and return home.

They say at this point some learners don't go to school anymore because they will not be taught anyways.

The parents say they are worried that the school might close and their children were not taught anything.

Contacted for comment, the Acting Director of Education in the Kavango East Region Muhongo Mateya said.

"There were two vacancies that existed at the school the first post became vacant at the end of the year last year that was in December the principal went on early retirement and then the school remained with two teachers and one of those two teachers also retired at the end of January and then there were two vacancies that existed and the two vacancies were advertised. You know when a post is advertised and the advert closes there must be that stage of selection and shortlisting and that was done those that were shortlisted qualified for interviews and because they were many there was no way that we could invite them for orals only."

He says the delay did not only come from the directorate but also from the school board members, saying the school board did not want to endorse the minutes for processing by the human resource because the person whom they preferred was not selected.

The Acting Director, however, says at the moment the appointment letters were signed off and the teacher will start teaching on Monday.
