The Dundee Precious Metals Community Trust handed over fencing materials worth over N$69 000 to the Enias Peter Nanyemba Combined School at Onamulele Village in the Omuthiya Constituency. The materials were handed over by Max Johnson, Chairperson of the Dundee Community Trust.
According to the school's principal, Naftal Shigwedha, the school has dilapidated classroom blocks that were declared unfit for children to be taught in.
Other challenges the principal pointed out include the lack of an administrative block, which results in teachers using one of the classrooms as an alternative.
The school also does not have a laboratory or library, and the principal is concerned about bird infestations in classrooms. "We are also experiencing a delay in the delivery of the national school feeding program. It is already April, and we have not yet received the food to feed the hungry children," said Shigwedha.
Shigwedha indicated that the poles of the old fence will be used to fence off the community cemetery, which is also in dire need of fencing.
The Dundee Precious Metals Tsumeb Community Trust was established in 2010 and has so far invested N$46 million in the Tsumeb community and the rest of the country. According to the chairperson, Max Johnson, the trust has lived up to its motto, 'uplifting through outreach', as many communities have been uplifted after reaching out to the trust.
Handing over the equipment, Johnson said that the fence to be constructed will keep out unwanted people who jump over the unfenced area of the school to utilize the school's WiFi.
"The fence will therefore provide a safe environment for the children. I have heard of the challenges that the school still faces, and I am glad to note that this school's principal is one of the very few principals who have written letters requesting assistance from the trust; hence, I am urging more principals to write to the trust even if they do not receive immediate assistance," Johnson noted.
