Watchmen at the Namapan veterinary checkpoint in the Otjozondjupa Region are calling on the government to provide them with electricity there.

The checkpoint has not had electricity for the past five years, making it difficult for them to operate at night.

The checkpoint at Namapan en route to Gam is a veterinary point tasked with controlling foot and mouth disease.

The checkpoint has been without electricity for the past five years, and sometimes the officials make use of a generator, which lasts for at most three hours.

"So we tried our office that side of Grootfontein, no solution; we wrote a letter to the director, no solution; the governor's office, no solution up to now, so we don't know if we might even follow up to Windhoek," said Karokuee Hange, a watchman at the checkpoint.

Despite them not executing their duties optimally, it is also unsafe for the watchmen to work in the dark as there are dangerous animals at their checkpoint.

"We used to come across elephants, hippos, and snakes every day. We used to kill snakes at the checkpoint. Sometimes you hear the snakes, you run away, and you cannot see where the snake is. We are in danger here, but we tried by all means, but there was no help. Now we want the government to assist with either diesel to come and repair our generator so that we can have proper electricity," said another watchman, Blackie Hange.

They are now appealing to the government to intervene.
