The Swapo Party President, Dr. Hage Geingob, says the party will seek legal advice on the Supreme Court's ruling regarding same-sex marriages conducted outside Namibia.
He was speaking at the Party's Central Committee meeting in Windhoek today.
The Supreme Court ruling mandated the Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety, and Security to acknowledge same-sex marriages performed in jurisdictions outside Namibia between citizens and foreign spouses.
In his address during the Central Committee meeting, Dr. Hage Geingob called on the party members to stay calm, saying the party will look into the matter legally and will give feedback to the public on its position regarding this ruling.
"In 1979, we already had a constitution and a law drafted. We were together to define what family is; we said the family will be a man and a woman. That's Swapo's position now. Why do you get excited as Swapo members? Our national constitution is equally explicit and defines marriage as being between a man and a woman. The constitution is very clear and does not change. Why was there this excitement? The court didn't say they were abolishing it; they interpreted certain parts of the Immigration Act. So we have put our heads together, we have put our lawyers together, and the paper is here explaining everything so that at the end of this meeting we will give our press conference to explain."
