A number of classrooms are under construction in the ||Kharas Region to ease overcrowding.
The cost of the development is estimated at N$9 million.
The classroom project includes the construction of two four-classroom blocks and an ablution block at Ambrosius Amutenya Primary School a three-classroom block at Keetmanshoop Primary, a three-classroom block at Keetmanshoop Secondary, and a five-classroom block at Kaitsi !Gubeb Combined Schools.
The government funded the construction of the classrooms, whose completion rate stands at 80%.
"This was a top-down approach that was taken in the allocation of these projects. We as the region simply submitted our needs, and even though we have prioritised our needs, they have prepared to meet them there, so we actually were only told that this is the allocation that you got, which is even far more than what you normally get, so you need to take that and proceed with it, explained the Chief Planner at the ||Kharas Education Directorate, Eind Hanze.
Classrooms under construction for Ambrosius Amutenya Primary School Amutenya Primary School, where classroom shortages are dire, had been put on an unserviced plot.
"Even though the need is so dire at Ambrosius Amutenya, the honourables and the people that were there will know that we are giving or delivering education in a fragmented way because the learners are here and there, all over, so we need to utilise it now; however, due to the lack of services, I don't know how long it will take."
More classrooms could be constructed in the 2024–2025 financial year with funding from the African Development Bank.
Schools that are expected to benefit from the planned classroom construction project are Helene Van Rhijn Primary, E. H. W. Baard Primary School, Michel Durocher Primary School, as well as the new schools expected to be put up in Keetmanshoop, Luderitz, and Aussenkehr.
