The Gender Equality, Poverty Eradication, and Social Welfare Ministry has condemned the brutal abuse of a 5-year-old girl by her family members in the Omaheke Region.

The incident, which happened towards the end of July, came to light in a video circulated on social media.

The Chief Public Relations Officer in the ministry, Lucas Haufiku, strongly condemned the act against the 5-year-old, who was allegedly assaulted by her three cousins, aged 6, 8, and 12, together with her aunt, at her uncle's home.

Haufiku added that under Namibian law, a child under the age of seven cannot be held liable for criminal offences unless the case can be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

He added that the Ministry is mindful of the fact that while the affected parties, including the aunt, victim, and perpetrators, are receiving psychological support, it is crucial to bear in mind that the perpetrators are also minors, hence the need to assist them in comprehending the consequences of their actions.

The Ministry warns the public to refrain from committing similar acts of this nature, as it might lead to serious consequences for the perpetrators.

It is reported that the victim is in a stable condition after receiving medical attention at Gobabis State Hospital.
