The current waste management situation in Namibia is not satisfactory.

The Minister of Environment, Forestry, and Tourism, Pohamba Shifeta, says many settlements, villages, towns, and municipalities do not have proper landfills and are instead using dumpsites for waste disposal.

In its quest to clean up, the ministry handed over a mobile recycling station to the community of Okaukuejo-Ombika, in the Etosha Game Park.

The station that bales discarded waste for recycling is to be used by lodges in and surrounding the National Park, including remote communities living in its proximity.

While this may be a great initiative, overall, the country's current level of waste management is unsatisfactory, says the minister.

"We are aware of efforts from some local authorities trying to find different ways of disposing of residential and domestic waste, but this still remains a major constraint. There is scope for improvement at all municipalities, and there are particular shortfalls with waste collection from informal areas."

Shifeta added that the ministry recognises the urgent need for improving waste management, hence the launch of the 2019 national solid waste management strategy.

Stakeholders who witnessed the launch of a mobile recycling station welcomed the initiative.

The recycling station will empower the community and earn them an income from selling recyclables.
