A large number of cattle have died in Kabbe South Constituency in the Zambezi Region from an unknown disease since July.
Carcasses have been discovered in the flood plains of Nakabolelwa, Ihaha, and Ivilinvinvi, among others, as the dead cattle could not be taken to the villages for human consumption.
Some of the cattle that died overnight in the kraals and outside were left there to rot.
A resident of Ivilinvinzi Village, Colga Kasale, told the nbc News team that farmers are starving as they have tried all kinds of medicines they were advised to buy with seemingly no improvement.
Kasale says they have been advised by Veterinary Services to buy vitamin supplements, given the suspicion that they may be suffering from vitamin deficiency and malnutrition.
Farmers say more cattle continue to die.
Another resident of Ihaha village, Millen Mwananawa, says they have lost 50 cattle in the past few months, including two that died on Saturday.
Mwananawa says most of the surviving cattle appear weak and have no hope of surviving much longer unless something is done to save them.
He is appealing to the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reform to assist the farmers in any way they can before they lose their remaining animals.
