Being a parliamentarian is more than just attending sessions or reviewing pieces of legislation.
The buzzword now is 'parliamentary diplomacy' and it is expected of MPs to be knowledgeable about domestic and international relationships.
It is for this reason that National Council MPs are being equipped with skills related to diplomacy, protocol, and etiquette at Swakopmund.
The training workshop is being attended by National Council MPs and law enforcement officials.
They are to be equipped with the skills to excel in parliamentary diplomacy while maintaining proper protocol and adhering to the highest standards of etiquette, thereby strengthening the nation's diplomatic and legislative capabilities.
Aspects of protocol and etiquette, including proper protocol for official events, effective communication skills, cultural sensitivities, and diplomatic manners, will be covered.
In a speech delivered on his behalf, Erongo Governor Neville Andre reminded parliamentarians that the skills shared with them can contribute to the effectiveness and efficiency of parliamentary proceedings.
Andre encourages the MPs to approach the training with an open mind and a willingness to learn and apply their parliamentary roles to better serve their constituents and uphold the principles of democracy.
Also speaking at the event was the Chairperson of the National Council and the Member of Parliament, Lukas Muha.
"The workshop will enable us to learn how to act in formal situations or ceremonies and learn about accepted behaviour in particular social groups or social situations. It will further enhance our skills in order to effectively dialogue and fruitfully collaborate with others locally and internationally."
