Bernhard !Gaeb, a well-known retired journalist, died Tuesday morning in Mariental, aged 66.

!Gaeb, a veteran journalist, is among the first black scribes in Namibia.

He started his career at the then-Journal newspaper, where he worked with other well-known personalities such as Freddy Philander.

It was his first job after high school at Augustineum Secondary School in Windhoek.

As he was maturing in his career, he moved on to the Afrikaans daily, Die Republikein.

He was provided with a training opportunity in the UK, where he studied journalism.

Bernhard, also known as Berries, would later join the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation in the newsroom as a journalist.

Here, he moved up the ladder to the position of assistant radio news editor, after which he branched out into public relations.

He joined Transnamib in its PR department, where he also worked closely with the line ministers of works.

The popular scribe finally took a bow out of formal employment and went into farming, buying his own land in the Hardap Region to engage in commercial farming for a number of years.

He moved to Mariental, where he made his new and permanent home with his family.

As a man who was not afraid of venturing into new things, he started and ran his own accommodation establishment at Mariental until his death.
