Even though Rundu is famous for its river and splendid greenery, there is another characteristic that stands out.
The amount of litter often found in various areas of the town.
Residents would often just choose a random spot and transform it into a dumping site—the result, an eyesore.
And with the rainy season approaching, dirty areas can quickly turn into health hazards, says Hendrik Kandjimi, the director of the We Care Charity Foundation.
They organised a clean-up campaign to raise awareness about the benefits of a safe and healthy environment in Kavango East.
"If we come up with these ideas, like cleaning campaigns every month or occasionally, at least we will change the mindset of people so that they will start taking good care of their town. But if we say that those people are like that, then they will never change. At least let's try to educate them that the more the town is clean, the more they will attract some visitors."
The Rundu Town Council donated 300 plastic bags to the cause and agreed to transport the waste.
Kandjimi also invited a local business and a students' association, which then provided volunteers to assist with the clean-up campaign.
Community members in Rundu had a meeting with regional leadership to discuss various issues affecting development in their town.
Some residents had strong views regarding littering in one of the most populated towns in Namibia.
