Between April and September this year, 25,582 people tested for HIV/AIDS in the |Khomas Region, of which 496 results returned positive.

This was revealed by the Chairperson of the |Khomas Regional Council, John Moonde, at the |Khomas Regional Council World AIDS Day commemoration in Windhoek on Friday.

With 'linkage to care', Moonde revealed that out of the 496 positive cases, 435 individuals have been linked to care, resulting in an 88% linkage rate.

He further added that patients are on care as of September this year; a total of 24,256 individuals are actively on antiretroviral (ARV) treatment, with 23 676 adults above 19 and 580 children below 18.

"With regards to anti-retroviral therapy outcomes, 401 children from zero to 18 years had an 80% viral load below 40 copies per ml, and 18,025 adults from 19 years and above had a remarkable 92% viral load below 40 copies per ml."

These statistics, Moonde says, highlight the substantial progress made in the region against HIV/AIDS.

"Despite these achievements, challenges persist, including clients refusing treatment despite the benefits of ART. As we move forward with our commemoration, let's keep these figures in mind. They serve as a testament to our collective commitment, but they also underscore the importance of continued dedication to the cause."

On her part, the Khomas Regional Governor, Laura McLeod-Katjirua, said Namibia recognises and values the role of communities as active participants and leaders in response to HIV/AIDS, as meaningful change is fostered at a community level.

"Our communities have been at the forefront of the fight against HIV/AIDS, advocating for awareness, embracing those affected, and working tirelessly to eradicate the stigma that often accompanies this disease. As we commemorate World AIDS Day, let us acknowledge the resilience of our communities and empower them further to lead in the quest for an HIV-free Namibia."

The commemoration kicked off with a march led by the NDF Brass Band and saw a number of entertaining performances.

This year, the Khomas Regional Council joined the world in commemoration of World AIDS Day through an approach that combines sports activities with HIV/AIDS intervention through a two-day inter-constituency tournament.
