A police officer has been arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol at Walvis Bay.

According to a police report, a white Toyota Hilux with a NamPol registration collided with a Honda Fit on Thursday, January 11, at half past ten at night along Independence Road in Walvis Bay.

The driver of the police vehicle is alleged to have driven the vehicle with an alcohol concentration level exceeding the legal limit.

It is further alleged that the suspect drove the motor vehicle recklessly and negligently and collided with the Honda Fit.

Both vehicles sustained major visible damage; however, no serious injuries were sustained by passengers in both vehicles.

In another matter, two shacks caught fire in Oletweni, Swakopmund, on Thursday at around 18:00.

It is alleged that the fire broke out while the owners of the shacks were not home.

The fire started on Ondjamba Street at erf no. 2864 before spreading to the neighbouring shack on erf no. 3664.

The police fire brigade responded to the call and managed to bring the situation under control. No fatalities or injuries were reported; however, damage to the shacks is noticeable.

Household items including furniture, clothing, documents, and food were destroyed.

The cause of the fire is still unknown, and investigations continue.
