Two Zambian truck drivers accused of attempted murder have been charged with sexually and physically assaulting a Namibian transgender person at Walvis Bay.

According to the court report, the accused allegedly assaulted the victim by hitting him with an unknown object over the head and body, causing a fracture to the scalp and wounds all over the body.

The victim was transported to the Windhoek State Hospital Intensive Care Unit (ICU) due to his critical condition.

It is alleged that the incident happened after the Zambian nationals were out drinking with a woman, whom they asked to invite another woman for company.

It is further supposed that the Zambians only figured out after they left the bar that the new companion was a transgender person, leading to the violent confrontation.

The Erongo Nampol Unit Commander for Community Affairs, Inspector Ileni Shapumba, confirmed the incident, saying it took place near the Engen service station on the Rooikop Road around the Dunes Mall area.

Shabombe Gift Shiaimenze, 32, and Jonathan Kamfwa, 40, who stand accused of attempted murder, appeared in court before Magistrate John Liwoyo Sindano.

The state prosecutor, Victoria Shikesho, opposed bail due to the seriousness of the offence and to allow time for further investigation.

The suspects also pose a flight risk and, as a result, will remain in custody.

The suspects made their first appearance in the Walvis Bay magistrate court on January 8, 2024.

The case was further postponed to March 27, 2024, for further investigation.
