Residents of Kalkfeld Settlement in Otjozondjupa Region have promised to live up to the dream of attaining the status of village council, as they say the late President Hage Geingob would have wanted.

Their sentiments were shared by Otjiwarongo Constituency Councillor, Marlene Mbakera, at the candlelight service held at the settlement's open market.

The settlement was left with fond memories of Dr. Geingob when he visited them and encouraged the residents and the leaders to grow economically and retain village council status.

Kalkfeld is home to over five thousand inhabitants.

Initially, between 1991 and 1996, it was designated a village before being downgraded due to a lack of economic growth.

However, in recent years, there has been some level of development.

"The president was saying I have a very big dream—Mbakera, you have a very big dream for Kalkfeld—will you get it done? and I told him I would. I told him I would, and he said the next time that I will invite him, it must be the day Kalkfeld is upgraded to village status. But unfortunately, he will not see that day. I want to tell you that the president was so interested; he was following the news and wanted to see Kalkfeld move. He pledged his support and said he would support you. The president was a friend of the Otjiwarongo constituency."

Mbakera commended the residents for turning up in large numbers, saying this was a sign that they loved Geingob and appreciated his support for the 'Friend of Otjiwarongo' group.

''I don't think the presidents understand how big and great he is. I don't think the President knew how impactful he was, because he was such a kind hearted person that there were no boundaries when it came to the President and his people. A president will call you. A president who will inquire about his constituents' well-being. The president showed interest in the dusty town of Kalkfeld. The President that came here to inaugurate or open our soccer field with us."

They also composed a song in his honour.
