Employees of various companies and trades that the nbc News team spoke to are calling on the government to show its appreciation to its workers by offering gifts or lunch packs. 

On a beautiful public holiday, some workers are busy filling up their cars and celebrating the day with friends and family, while for others, this day means business as usual.

Those in the security industries, health facilities, car washes, and retailers, among others, serve the nation, even on a day such as this.
 
Sakaria Namukanda, who is on duty, describes Workers Day as vital for all employees.
 
Namukanda, however, insists that essential services workers be allowed to work half a day and receive double pay to honour them for sacrificing themselves. 
 
Another citizen on duty was the hospital maintenance worker at Rhino Park Hospital, Emmanuel Makaveli.

He hopes police will make their presence felt in the suburbs, as he says thieves target the homes of those who are at work.
