Namibia is faced with a severe drought again this year, affecting both humans and livestock.

It is against this background that Vice President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah is calling on Namibians to work together with the government to manage and mitigate the effects of drought.

Nandi-Ndaitwah was speaking during a meeting with different traditional leaders and the community at Gam Settlement in the Otjozondjupa Region. 

The Vice President says the government will mobilise resources to see to it that those who are in need of food are assisted.

"We are only appealing to everyone to be honest and sincere, and if there is anything in their storage, please don't try to rush for the little that comes from the government but rather reserve that for those who are in critical need of food."

She also instructed those responsible for food aid distribution to exercise honesty.

"We want people to give the correct information and not try to get more than what an individual can afford or to give more than what the government can afford to give to an individual, because if you are given more than what the government can afford per individual, that will mean another person is not going to be served."

The Vice President says the government will enable farmers to have some breeding stock in the hope that the drought will not be as severe in the next season.

She says there will be a time when farmers will be asked to destock and save money to restock once the situation normalises.

Traditional leaders have been urged to be the eyes and ears of the government to ensure fairness in the distribution of food.
