Fifty-two young men from the Khomas and Erongo regions participated in a three-day Grassroot Soccer workshop organized by the Ministry of Sport, Youth, and National Service in Keetmanshoop, ||Kharas Region.

The workshop aims to improve access to quality health services and promote adherence to medical treatment. Grassroot Soccer is an organization focused on adolescent health, using soccer to impart life-saving information, services, and mentorship to help young men lead healthier lives.

The program utilizes soccer to address issues affecting young people, empowering them to make informed decisions on health matters such as alcohol and drug abuse, gender-based violence, mental health, and reproductive health and rights.

''Many of them are unemployed and often engage in unproductive activities like alcohol and drug abuse. We hope this workshop will inspire them to become change-makers in their communities, encouraging peers to change their behaviors'' Youth Officer in the Ministry of Sport Youth and National Service Petrus Shikongo said.

Participants in the Grassroot Soccer workshop shared that the program opened their eyes to the dangers of leading unproductive and unhealthy lifestyles. They emphasized the need for men to unite and promote positive change in their communities.

Andreas Sheya stated that ''Grassroot Soccer has given me confidence to be an agent of change in my community. We've learned how to address issues like drug abuse, sexual abuse, and mental health using soccer as a platform for community impact''.

Another participant  Innocent Shombero  also spoke to NBC stating that ''When I return, I'll talk to my friends, family, even strangers. I plan to organize soccer tournaments that bring people together, especially those in need. This experience has changed me, and I want to continue changing and helping others feel safe''.

All Grassroot Soccer participants are paired with mentors and become Grassroot Soccer Caring Coaches, guiding the next generation. Similar workshops are scheduled for other regions across the country.
