The Namibia Institute of Mining and Technology (NIMT) signed a collective agreement with the Namibia Public Workers Union (NAPWU) and the Namibia National Teachers' Union (NANTU) in Windhoek.
During the event, it was revealed that employees had received a five percent salary increase over a period of 30 years.
The parties reached consensus on salary and benefit increases for the 2024/2025 financial year.
They agreed to a five percent raise in salary and housing allowances for all employees, as well as an increase in medical aid. The medical aid will now consist of an 85 percent company contribution and a 15 percent contribution from employees.
Additionally, the company will provide transportation for employees at the Tsumeb and Keetmanshoop campuses, starting from March 1st.
Petrus Nevonga, General Secretary of NAPWU, stated, "Our relationship with NIMT is healthy. We display unity and teamwork, and we will continue working in this manner going forward. The parties have successfully negotiated and concluded the salary increase and other benefits."
Ralph Bussel, Executive Director of NIMT, expressed, "We have made significant progress in the past three years, including signing a collective agreement with the combined unions. Since then, things have improved. We have gained more strength and unity."
The parties did not disclose the exact amount that the employees had bargained for.
Imelda Handoenge, the Employees Representative at NIMT, said, "It has been a long time coming. This is the first time in over thirty years that something like this has happened. It is a historical moment. We have come to an agreement, and that is what negotiations are all about. Not everyone will be happy with the outcome, but overall, the majority are satisfied."
Furthermore, the parties agreed that salaries and other benefits will increase for the 2025/2026 fiscal year. They will also engage in the review of the governance policy by September of this year.
