The Oshana Police have apprehended six members of a notorious gang that has been terrorising the public and committing a series of robberies over the past months.
Oshana Police Commander Naftal Sakaria says four more suspects are on the run.
Commissioner Sackaria says the combating of crime in the region remains a top priority and acknowledges the public's assistance in the arrest of the six suspects.
One of the suspects, Wellem Sheehama, known as Kakuva, was allegedly involved in nine armed robberies in the Oshana, Ohangwena, Oshikoto, and Erongo regions.
He is also facing a murder charge and escaping from lawful custody.
Aktofel Kamudulunge known as Six is also facing a murder charge, allegedly committed in the |Khomas Region and armed robbery.
Shikongo Shilumbu, known as Kim, Kambata Abiatal, Dallas Sakaria, and Augustus Shikongo, known as Kashuku, are also facing various charges of armed robberies.
"The mistake they made was that they chose to come and commit crime in the Oshana Region. They embarked on a series of robberies two weeks ago. They committed robberies in Ondangwa, Oshakati, and Omatando. So what happened is that when they started committing robberies here, we were in pursuit, and they decided to run, and through intelligence, we intercepted them before they could leave."
The gang members are also reported to have stolen cash from jackpot machines across the Oshana Region while causing extensive damage to the gambling machines.
Commissioner Sakaria says the police are in pursuit of the other four gang members, known only by their nicknames: Costa, Zombo, Termus, and Sam.
"The first robbery was at Omulunga bar, where they smashed seven jackpot machines, took cash that was in the machines, and also took alcohol. At VIP Bar, they smashed five jackpots, as you can see from the damage being done to the property and the effect it has on business in the region. Therefore, the whole community in Oshana must unite in identifying the rest of them that are outstanding so that we remove them from the community."
