Karibib Mayor Davey van Wyk has condemned the brutal killing of women and children by men.

"I want to urge the community of Karibib, let's keep this family in our prayers, and let's see how we can assist this family. Whether it's prayer or anything small you have, let's be there for our community because they are part of us and they affect us. Anything that affects one family in my town will definitely affect the whole community, so we should be able to stand and ensure we assist the family and also give counselling to the men. And we urge all men if there are problems concerning relationship issues and if you need counselling, please reach out to the councillors and to the council so we can seek some assistance and help for this type of incident to avoid these types of incidents."

The mayor revealed that efforts are being made to prevent gender-based violence.

"We have availed a building from the council's side in the Usab location for the police to move to that building to be able to assist and respond quickly when we have these types of incidents. There is a group of men who have an organisation called Action Against Gender-Based Violence. This group was founded, I think, two years ago when we had an incident involving a small boy who was kidnapped and killed. I urge my community members, especially the male counterparts in my town, to be part of this organisation to be able to be given the counselling and assistance we need whenever we are having these relationship challenges."

The mayor was speaking following the burning to death of Josephine Nauses and her two children, by Mandela Mbaunguraiye who also died in the incident,
