The National Democratic Party (NDP) has called on the government to be proactive in addressing social issues affecting the nation.

Speaking at a media briefing in Windhoek, NDP President Martin Lukato commended social justice activist Shaun Gariseb, who led an online petition against the then-proposed electricity tariff increase. The government intervened and subsidised the envisaged increases.

"The government must not wait for petitions and demonstrations by activists to do things they are supposed to do on their own and in their own interest. Well done to activist Shaun Gariseb and his team. You have helped the whole country by standing up for us. The NDP salutes you."

The NDP also proposed some interventions to reduce unemployment.

"If we create what we call a levy system, then their talent can also be used as a source of income or work because not all people are 9 to 5. Some people believe that if they play football and get a salary from that, whether a box or whatever, a system needs to be put in place to introduce what we call a levy. The NDP is prepared in its manifesto to say that we are going to develop a law to make sure that graduates, after graduation, should go into the military in the NDF. Because after graduation, they go on the streets, but the NDP says no, they need to get employment. NDP is going to make sure that all factories of all kinds are created in 14 regions so that our people should not continue to suffer unemployment."

Lukato also called on all eligible voters to register to take part in the November 27 Presidential and National Assembly Elections.
