The Namibia Household Income and Expenditure Survey (NHISES), last conducted in 2016 and originally scheduled every five years, will be carried out in 2025.

The delay is attributed to budgetary constraints, compelling the Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA) to achieve more with less.

The agency needs N$250 billion to carry out its responsibilities effectively.

Despite receiving only N$200 billion in funding, the agency continues to plan and execute its initiatives.

This includes conducting the NHIES last undertaken in 2016, scheduled from March 2025 to March 2026. A pilot survey will run from September to October 2024 at a cost of about N$43 million.

Over N$50 million will be allocated for the main survey.

The NHIES aims to gather data on poverty indicators, income distributions, household expenditures, and socio-economic factors crucial for planning, policymaking, decision-making, and research purposes.

The survey will also create job opportunities, hiring approximately 171 temporary staff.

Highlighting the critical need for truthful household responses, NSA's Deputy Statistician-General Ottilie Mwazi urges citizens to actively engage in the survey to improve government planning.

Citizens who decline to participate or provide inaccurate information may face legal consequences.

Tablets will be used to collect data using Computer-Assisted Personal Interviews in all 14 regions.
