The Police Inspector General, Joseph Shikongo, has called on members of the force to prepare themselves to maintain law and order during the upcoming November national elections .

Lieutenant General Shikongo said this during the closing of the weeklong  Namibia Police Force Command Conference, held at Ongwediva in the Oshana Region.

Lieutenant General Shikongo warned officers in the force not to engage themselves in politics and to remain neutral in their undertakings.

The conference was used to critically analyse strategic issues in the force and adopt prompt implementation strategies to enhance efficiency and effectiveness across the regions.

The police chief  says he is happy that 14 resolutions out of 16 were passed in the previous conference and have been successfully implemented, adding that more resolutions passed this year will also be implemented promptly.

"However, it goes without saying that implementation, in most cases, will require the allocation of resources. Hence, we look forward to working together with our business community and the general public to ensure that our programmes and activities aimed at combating crime are realised. To this end, I hereby direct all commanders to do all "that you can, with what you have, where you are," to ensure deadlines for implementation are met and progress is reported when required or at the next Senior Command Conference."

The police donated items to three families in Oshuulo, Omatando, and at the Dr. Frans Aupa Indongo Special Care Centre in Okandjengedi, worth about N$30,000 in total.

The money was generated through an in-house monthly donation by police top brass and forms part of their annual corporate social responsibilities.

Handing over the donation, Shikongo said families and institutions that house less privileged members of society deserve to be assisted.

He added that no Namibian should die of hunger.

"We want to assure the Namibian public that in spite of our mandate to fight crime and protect the community, we will not forget the challenges our people are faced with, hence our contribution to the three identified. We hope this donation will be put to good use and that it will indeed assist you with the basic needs that we brought here."

The conference was held under the theme, embracing innovation to navigate policing challenges.
