As part of its efforts to enhance the standard of facilities and operational capabilities of police in the region, the |Khomas Regional Council took it upon itself to repair police vehicles as well as repaint and renovate holding cells.
This is all being done at a cost of N$1.5 million.
The |Khomas Region Governor, Laura McLeod-Katjirua, says the kind gesture aims to improve the working conditions of the police force.
"That's why, with the regional commander, we agreed to repair the fleets and also give us some plumbing work, and that is exactly what we did, to make the exercise easier and also to make it easier for our law enforcement to be working in a very conducive environment."
The council decided to repair 11 police cars and handed over five of them that were already done.
The regional council will also pay for minor electrical and plumbing work at various police holding cells around the region.
The Inspector General of the Police says the gesture will assist the police in their quest to render quality service.
"This partnership between the Namibian Police Force and the |Khomas Regional Council is a shining example of what can be achieved when we work together towards a common goal. It is a reminder that the safety and well-being of our communities are shared responsibilities. By joining forces, we can create a safer and more secure environment for all citizens."
Lieutenant General Joseph Shikongo also touched on how stretched out the police's budget is; hence, they welcome stakeholder support to ensure effective policing.
"Our budget might look big, but I can assure you it's just to feed the people here N$6,000 per month, and you have on-going operations. Currently, I have over 200 people deployed at national parks. You have the professionals that are promoted on this budget, and we welcome any contribution made by any organisation or company to ensure that Namibia becomes a crime-free society. We feel pity when we hear someone is killed or robbed, and for us to fight against crime is when we unite."
