In ensuring that every learner has access to education, musician Martin Morocky, well known as King Tee Dee, launched the King Tee Dee "Walk for Education" initiative.
The initiative is a journey of hope and commitment to education aimed at building, improving, and providing needed resources at schools in the country's rural communities.
Morocky will, amongst others, embark on a 70-kilometre walk from Windhoek to Okahandja from the 20th to the 21st of September to draw learners' and stakeholders' attention to the importance of access to education.
He says the initiative is a step towards ensuring that every child has access to quality education.
"The benefits of this walk extend beyond the educational sphere. Physically, walking promotes health and well-being, enhancing our stamina and endurance. Mentally, it offers a space for reflection, fostering a sense of purpose and determination. As we walk, we are reminded of the resilience and strength required to achieve our goals. This journey is not only about the distance covered but also about the unity and collaboration it represents."
The Executive Director of the Ministry of Education, Art, and Culture, Sanet Steenkamp, applauded Morocky for the initiative.
She says through the charity walk, they will raise awareness of the importance of education and the power of collective action in driving positive change, especially the barriers to accessing quality education that the ministry faces.
"We have more than 4,000 classrooms made of sticks, zinc, and traditional materials and temporary classrooms. Last year we constructed 502 classrooms, and this year 512 classrooms—that is 1,040 classrooms. So we need to construct more than 3,000, and every single classroom will be a space of learning for our children."
The public is encouraged to join in and contribute to the charity walk with individual packages ranging from N$100 to N$350, and corporate packages from N$6,500 to N$14,500.
The project will run for ten years.
